There are moments in every life when the path forward is genuinely unclear. Not unclear in a way that more research or more advice or more careful thinking will eventually resolve — but unclear in the way that only becomes clear when you stop relying entirely on your own understanding and start asking for something beyond it. The job decision that could change everything. The relationship at a crossroads. The life chapter that has ended and left you standing in the space between what was and what comes next, with more questions than answers and a growing sense that your own wisdom is simply not enough to navigate what is in front of you.
That’s exactly what this collection of prayers for guidance is here to help you bring before God. You’ll find the best prayers for clarity in difficult decisions, wisdom for the crossroads moments, peace in the waiting when the answer has not yet arrived, discernment to recognize God’s direction when it comes, and the surrendered, open-handed trust of someone who has decided that the wisest thing they can do is stop insisting on figuring it out alone. Pray them at the beginning of the decision before the pressure builds. Pray them in the middle of the confusion when every option still looks equally uncertain. God has not left you to navigate this without Him — and these prayers are how you stop trying to.
Prayers for Guidance When the Path Has Stopped Being Obvious
There is a specific kind of disorientation that arrives not when everything has gone wrong but when the clarity has simply gone quiet. The person standing at the fork in the road is not always in crisis. Sometimes they are just genuinely, specifically, I-have-looked-at-this-from-every-angle unable to tell which direction is the right one. The job offer that could be the open door or the distraction from the actual door. The relationship that has reached a decision point and will not wait much longer for the decision to arrive. The calling that is present as a sense of direction without being present as a set of instructions. The season that has ended and whose ending has left a space that has not yet been filled with the next thing. The disorientation of the unclear path is not a spiritual failure — it is the specific, common, entirely human experience of a person who is finite trying to navigate a future that only the infinite can see completely. The prayer for guidance is the most natural prayer available to that person. Not the last resort but the first response — the immediate, honest, I-cannot-see-this-clearly-from-where-I-am-standing turning toward the One who sees the whole path from every vantage point simultaneously. These prayers are for the unclear path. For the person standing at the fork with genuine need and genuine faith and the honest admission that they need more than they brought to this moment.
A Prayer From the Person Who Has Lost the Thread
Dear Lord, I had a sense of where I was going and somewhere in the last season the thread got lost — not dramatically, not in a single moment of catastrophic redirection, but gradually, the way the path through the woods becomes less distinct the further from the trailhead you go. I am not sure exactly when the clarity faded. I know that right now the forward direction is less obvious than it was and that the confidence I had about the next steps has been replaced by the specific, quiet, slightly-embarrassing uncertainty of a person who used to know and no longer does. I am asking You to give it back. Not the false clarity of the decided mind — the actual, Spirit-given, this-is-the-way clarity that belongs to the one who asked. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer When Every Direction Looks the Same
God, I have looked at the options available to me from every angle I know how to look from and they have not sorted themselves into the clear yes and the clear no that I was hoping the looking would produce. They look approximately equal in their appeal and their risk. The advisors I have asked have given me their genuine best and the genuine best has not resolved into consensus. The prayer I have been praying has not yet produced the specific, unmistakable sense of direction that I have been asking for. I am still asking. Not impatiently — persistently. With the faith that the asking is landing somewhere even when the answer has not yet arrived in the form I can act on. Direct me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Next Step When the Whole Staircase Is Invisible
Heavenly Father, I want to see the whole plan before I take the next step and I have been waiting for the whole plan long enough to understand that the whole plan is not what You are providing right now. What is available is the step — the one immediately in front of me, the single decision that the current moment requires rather than the complete itinerary from here to the destination. Give me the courage to take the step that is available without requiring the full visibility that is not yet available. Your word is a lamp to my feet, not a floodlight for the whole path. Illuminate the next step. Let it be sufficient for the moving. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer When the Decision Cannot Wait Much Longer
Dear Lord, the luxury of unlimited deliberation has not accompanied this decision — the window is closing and the clarity that I was hoping would arrive before the window closed is still assembling itself and the pressure of the timeline is making it harder rather than easier to hear what the Spirit is saying. I am bringing the urgency to You rather than letting it drive me into the hasty response that urgency usually produces when it goes unaddressed by anything wiser than the panic. Speak into the pressure. Give me what I need to decide well even within the time constraint. The God who provides for the need is the God who provides for the decision that cannot wait. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Courage to Move Before the Certainty Arrives
God, there is a possibility — and I want to hold it honestly — that the guidance I have been waiting to receive before I act is not going to arrive in advance of the action but in the course of it. That the clarity is a companion of the moving rather than a prerequisite for it. That Abraham did not receive the full itinerary before he left Ur — he received enough to go, and the rest came along the way. Give me the faith that moves before the certainty has arrived. The specific, costly, what-if-I-am-wrong faith that takes the step with the light that is available and trusts the God who provides more light to the one who is already walking in what they have. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer to Stop Confusing the Loudest Option With the Right One
Heavenly Father, I want to name something specific about the way I have been making decisions in this season — I have been mistaking the option that presents itself most forcefully for the option that is most aligned with where You are directing. The loudest door. The most urgent-feeling opportunity. The option that has the most momentum behind it because the most people are pushing for it. Give me the discernment to know the difference between what is loud and what is right, between what is pressing and what is best, between the urgency that belongs to God’s timing and the urgency that belongs to everything else that is competing for the position that only God should occupy in the directing of this life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Light on the Specific Part of the Path That Is Dark
Dear Lord, the path is not entirely unclear — there are parts of it I can see reasonably well and parts that have gone dark in a way that the visible parts cannot compensate for. The unclear part is specific and named and it is the part that the whole forward movement seems to hinge on. Bring light to the specific dark section. Not a general illumination of the spiritual life — the targeted, this-particular-question-needs-an-answer light that the specific uncertainty requires. I know what I do not know. I am asking for the knowing of exactly that thing. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer to Want God’s Direction More Than My Preferred Outcome
God, I want to be honest about the way the wanting has been shaping the listening. I have a preferred outcome and the preferred outcome has been influencing what I receive when I listen for Your direction — the subtle, self-serving translation of ambiguous signs into confirmation of what I already wanted to do. Give me the genuine, interior, this-is-real-not-performed desire for Your direction over my preference. Not the resignation that calls itself submission because it has given up caring — the actual, deliberate, I-trust-You-more-than-I-trust-my-own-judgment orientation toward the God whose plans are better than the ones I have been drafting. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayers for Guidance in the Decisions That Shape Everything After
The load-bearing decisions are the ones that change the trajectory — the fork that, once taken, determines what forks are available afterward and which ones are no longer accessible. Career. Marriage. The city you live in. The commitment you make to the community or the calling or the person that reorganizes the available future. These are not the decisions that resolve themselves through casual deliberation. They are the ones that deserve the serious, sustained, nothing-held-back asking — the Solomon-at-Gibeon prayer that recognizes the weight of what is being decided and chooses to bring the full honesty of the need to the only One who sees from every vantage point simultaneously. These prayers are for the weight-bearing moments — the decisions that deserve more than the ordinary prayer because what is decided in them shapes what every subsequent decision is made within.
A Prayer Before a Major Life Decision
Dear Lord, the decision in front of me is one of the ones that matters — the kind that people mean when they say their life went one direction rather than another because of a choice made at a specific moment. I want to make this choice from the wisdom that comes from You rather than from the desire or the fear or the social pressure that has been doing most of the influencing so far. Show me what You see from where You stand. The angle on this decision that I cannot access from inside the wanting and the worrying. Give me the clarity to choose what You would choose for me if I let You choose. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Guidance in a Career Decision
God, the career question has moved past the professional into the personal in the way that calling always does — it is not only about the job, it is about what I am supposed to be doing with the specific combination of ability and passion and access that this life has been given. I do not want to choose the impressive option over the right one. I do not want to choose the comfortable option over the called one. Give me the clarity to know my lane — the specific, this-is-what-I-was-made-for directional sense that does not arrive from the career assessment quiz but from the God who designed the abilities and the purposes simultaneously and who knows where the two intersect for this particular person. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Guidance in a Relationship Decision
Heavenly Father, the relationship is at the place that requires the decision I have been circling for longer than the circling has been serving either of us. The staying or the going. The committing or the releasing. The moving forward or the honest acknowledgment that forward is not available in this particular direction. I do not want to make this choice from fear or from the social pressure of the season or from the specific exhaustion of a person who wants the uncertainty to be over regardless of which direction the ending takes. Give me the wisdom that comes from Your perspective on this person and this relationship and the life that is asking to be decided. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Guidance About Where to Live
Dear Lord, the geography question is not merely logistical — the place carries the relationships and the community and the church and the proximity to the people who matter and the specific environment that shapes the person who lives inside it. I want to be where You want me. Not where the career is most compelling or the cost of living is most manageable or the social network is most established — where You are sending me, where the life You designed for me is most available to be lived. Give me the specific, geographical, this-is-where guidance that the open question is asking for. Let the place be clear. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer When Two Good Options Are Both Genuinely Good
God, the difficulty in this particular decision is not that the wrong option is tempting — it is that both options appear to be genuinely good and the genuine goodness of both of them is what is making the choosing so difficult. I know You can work through either path. I know You are not so narrow that only one of these is the one that allows Your purposes to be fulfilled. But I also know that one of them is better for the specific person I am and the specific calling I carry and I am asking for the discernment to know which one that is. Not both. The better one. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Guidance in a Financial Decision
Heavenly Father, the financial decision has implications that run further forward in time than I can see clearly and the pressure to decide before the picture is complete is real. Give me the wisdom that is not intimidated by the complexity. The clarity to see past the surface of this decision — past the numbers and the risk and the opportunity — to what it will actually produce in the life I am trying to build. Let the decision be made from the perspective of the person whose treasure is in the right place. Not from fear, not from greed, not from the specific anxiety of a season in which the financial pressure has been making every money decision feel more urgent than wisdom advises. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayers for Guidance When God Feels Silent on the Question
The silence is the hardest part of seeking guidance — not the absence of the answer, but the apparent absence of the God who is supposed to be providing it. The prayer has been said. The Word has been searched. The counsel of the wise has been sought. The waiting has been patient and sometimes not patient and patient again. And the direction has not materialized in a form that produces the confidence the decision requires. This is the specific, wearing, I-am-still-here-still-asking season that every person who has prayed seriously about anything significant has experienced. The silence is not evidence of absence. Every generation of the tradition has documented the experience of the apparent divine silence and the same discovery on the other side of it — that the God who seemed to withhold the answer was working in ways that the answer would have interrupted. These prayers are for the waiting that has gone long enough to need its own prayer.
A Prayer When the Asking Has Not Produced Clarity
Dear Lord, I have asked for guidance about this and the guidance has not arrived in a form that I can clearly act on and the gap between the asking and the receiving has produced a specific, wearing, am-I-doing-this-wrong uncertainty about the prayer itself. I am not going to interpret the silence as a no. I am not going to interpret it as the end of the asking. I am going to bring the asking back to You again today in the same honest, this-is-still-unresolved, I-still-need-direction form I brought it the first time. You said ask. I am asking. You said seek. I am seeking. The door has not opened yet and I am still knocking. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer to Trust God in the Silence Between the Request and the Answer
God, the silence is doing something in me that the immediate answer would not have done — the patience is being built, the trust is being tested and deepened rather than simply confirmed, the specific, uncomfortable formation of a person who is learning that You are trustworthy in the waiting as fully as You are trustworthy in the answering. I want to receive the silence as formation rather than only as frustration. Not by pretending it is not difficult — by choosing to stand on what I know about Your character while the feeling of that character is less available than I would prefer. You are working. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Guidance That Has Been Sought for a Long Time
Heavenly Father, the question has been on the table for long enough that I have begun to wonder whether the extended uncertainty is itself the answer — whether the not-knowing is the invitation to stay in the present moment rather than moving toward a future that You have not yet opened. I am holding that possibility. And I am also asking, specifically, for the clarity that would close the question if closing it is what this season is moving toward. Either way — in the direction or in the continued holding of the question — be present with me in the seeking. Let the seeking itself be the evidence that I trust You to eventually speak. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer When the Signs Are Confusing and Contradictory
Dear Lord, the signs are not pointing in the same direction. The open door and the closed one are side by side. The confirmation seems to arrive and then something arrives that seems to challenge the confirmation. The peace I thought I felt in one direction gets complicated by the peace I seem to feel in the other. I am not trying to read tea leaves — I am genuinely trying to discern where You are directing and the signals have been producing confusion rather than clarity. Cut through the confusion. Be unmistakable. Speak in a form that is clear enough to act on and direct enough to distinguish from the wanting I might be translating as divine confirmation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer to Be Still Enough to Actually Hear
God, I want to name the possibility that the silence is not the absence of Your speaking but the insufficiency of my stillness. The asking has been consistent and the busyness has been equally consistent and the two have been happening simultaneously in a life that does not always have the specific, undistracted, everything-else-paused quality that genuine listening to God’s direction requires. Still me. Not the body only — the interior. The planning and the worrying and the constant low-level processing of the question in the background of everything else I am doing. Make the inside quiet enough to hear what the noise has been covering. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer When the Answer Seems Delayed Beyond What Makes Sense
Heavenly Father, the timing of the guidance does not make sense from my position inside the decision — the window that seems to require the direction has been open long enough that I was certain the direction would have arrived before now. And it has not. And the window is still open. And I am still asking. Help me to trust that Your timing operates from a vantage point I do not have access to — that the delay that looks like lateness from where I am standing looks like something entirely different from where You are standing, which is outside the timeline entirely. Your timing is not calibrated to the urgency I feel. It is calibrated to the outcome You are working toward. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayers for Guidance for the Specific Person in the Specific Season
The prayer for guidance is most powerful when it is most specific — when it goes past the general request for direction and into the named, particular, this-is-who-I-am-and-this-is-what-I-am-asking-about prayer that is addressed to a God who is attentive to every specific person in every specific situation. The student who does not know what to study. The person in midlife who is not sure the path they chose at twenty-five still belongs to the person they have become. The person in recovery who is rebuilding a life from the pieces of the previous one and who needs more than inspiration — they need the specific, practical, where-do-I-go-from-here guidance that only the God who knows the full picture can provide. These prayers are for the specific people in the specific seasons.
A Prayer for the Person at a Career Crossroads in Midlife
Dear Lord, the calling I have been living out for the last decade and a half has produced a restlessness that I did not have permission to name until recently — the specific, interior, is-this-still-what-I-am-supposed-to-be-doing question that arrives in midlife for the person who has been competent and faithful and is now wondering whether the faithfulness is supposed to take a different form going forward. I am not walking away from anything. I am asking the question honestly. Is there a next thing? Is the restlessness the Spirit or the mid-career itch that everyone feels? Help me know the difference. And if there is a next thing — show me what it is. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Young Person Who Does Not Know What They Are For
God, the question of what I am supposed to do with this life is not an abstract question for me right now — it is the daily, pressing, everyone-else-seems-to-know reality of being young and uncertain and surrounded by people who have figured out their direction while I am still looking for the trailhead. I am bringing the uncertainty to You rather than performing a confidence I do not have. You made me for something specific. The gifts and the passions and the specific configuration of what I am are not accidental — they are the fingerprints of a Creator who designed them for a purpose. Show me the purpose. Not all of it. The beginning of it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Person Rebuilding After Failure
Heavenly Father, the previous path ended in a way that was not chosen and the rebuilding from the end of it has required first the grief and then the question of what comes next from a position that is significantly different from the position the previous chapter started from. I do not have the resources I had. I do not have the confidence I had. I have the experience of the failure and the slowly recovering faith that something is still available on the other side of it. Guide me from here. Not from the before — from the actual, current, this-is-what-I-have-left starting point that this rebuild is beginning from. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Person Who Has Always Known and Now Does Not
Dear Lord, I used to have the clarity. The direction was something I carried with a confidence that the people around me could see from the outside. And somewhere in the last season it went quiet — not dramatically, not in a single loss, but gradually, the way the signal fades when you drive out of range. I miss the clarity. Not the arrogance that sometimes lived alongside it but the genuine, settled, I-know-where-I-am-going sense that made the daily decisions easier and the long-term investments feel worth making. Give it back. Or give me the peace to navigate the uncertain season with the faith that carried me before I had the clarity. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Caregiver Who Has Lost Sight of Their Own Path
God, I have been so fully occupied with the path of the person I am caring for that the question of my own direction has been deferred and deferred until the deferral has become so habitual that I am not entirely sure what my own direction would look like if the caretaking were no longer the primary organizing principle of the daily life. I am not asking for release from the caregiving. I am asking for the small, maintained, even-in-this-season sense of my own direction that the caregiving was never supposed to fully replace. Let me know who I am going to be when this season releases me. Keep the thread of my own calling alive. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Person Seeking God’s Direction for the First Time
Heavenly Father, I have not always brought my decisions to You. I have made them from the best available combination of logic and desire and the advice of people I trusted and the results have been the results that the purely human decision-making process produces — sometimes good, sometimes not, always limited by the ceiling of what the human framework can see. I want to try the other way. I want to bring this specific decision to You and actually wait for what comes back before I act on what I have already decided I want to do. Teach me how to do this. Teach me to hear what I have not been listening for. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayers for Guidance Through Doubt, Confusion, and the Interior Fog
The interior fog is its own specific obstacle to the receiving of guidance — the condition in which the prayer is being said sincerely and the Scripture is being read faithfully and the counsel of the wise is being sought and yet everything is still filtered through the doubt and the confusion and the specific, persistent, I-cannot-see-clearly quality of the interior that the difficult season has produced. The fog is not a spiritual failure. It is the honest report of a human person trying to navigate something significant while the instruments are partially obscured. These prayers are for the fog — for the person who is seeking with genuine faith through conditions that do not make the seeking easy, for the God who can speak clearly into even the murkiest interior and whose voice is not muffled by the conditions it passes through.
A Prayer When Confusion Has Replaced Clarity
Dear Lord, the confusion is not strategic on my part — I genuinely cannot see clearly right now and the inability to see clearly has been the condition of the interior for long enough that I have begun to wonder whether the confusion is the thing that needs to be addressed before the direction can be received. If there is something in me that is generating the confusion — the unconfessed thing, the unaddressed fear, the preferred outcome that is distorting the receiving — show me what it is and give me the willingness to deal with it. And if the confusion is simply the fog of the difficult season — speak clearly through it. Your voice is not stopped by my confusion. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer When Fear Is Distorting the Discernment
God, the fear is one of the things that has been doing the most work in the guidance process and fear is not a reliable discernment instrument. It reads the uncertain future through the lens of the worst possibility and produces a guidance-shaped anxiety that feels like direction but is actually only the contraction of the frightened person away from what is threatening. I want to bring the fear out into the light before I try to discern through it. This is the fear. Named and specific and real. Now — speak from the place that is not fear. Give me the direction that comes from trust rather than the avoidance that comes from the fear I have been calling discernment. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Interior Quiet That Discernment Requires
Heavenly Father, the discernment I am asking for requires an interior condition that the current season has not been consistently providing — the stillness, the quiet, the settled, I-am-not-running-from-anything quality of the interior that is most receptive to what the Spirit speaks. The season has been noisy in the interior. The anxiety and the analysis and the constant low-grade processing of the question have made the kind of deep listening that guidance requires significantly more difficult to access. Give me pockets of the genuine quiet. Interrupt the noise. Create the interior condition that makes the receiving possible. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer When Doubt Has Made the Asking Feel Pointless
Dear Lord, I want to name the doubt that has been making the seeking harder — the specific, honest, is-this-even-reaching-anything doubt that arrives when the asking has been sustained without the producing of the clarity that the asking was supposed to produce. I have asked this prayer with full faith and I have asked it with thin faith and I have asked it from the middle of the doubt about whether the asking was connecting to anything. Hear the asking from the doubt. Be the God who receives the prayer from the person whose faith is the size of a mustard seed and who is planting it in the soil of a question that genuinely matters. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for the Wisdom That Comes Through Other People
God, one of the ways You guide is through the specific people You have placed in this season of life — the counselor, the mentor, the friend who speaks the hard truth in love, the pastor who says the thing from the pulpit that lands as if it were addressed directly to the question I had not told anyone I was carrying. Give me the humility to receive guidance from the human sources You are using. The pride that insists on the private revelation before the relational one has cost me direction I could have received earlier. Let me hear what the people You have sent are saying. Let me recognize the voice of God in the voices of the wise. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayers of Surrender, Trust, and Gratitude on the Path
Every prayer for guidance eventually arrives at the place where the asking has to become the surrendering — the releasing of the need to know everything before moving, the giving over of the outcome to the One who holds it, the gratitude for the direction already given that makes room for the direction still coming. The person who has genuinely surrendered the path to God is not the passive person who has stopped seeking. They are the most active seeker available — because they are seeking with the open hand that can receive rather than the clenched fist that is protecting the preferred outcome, moving with the confidence of someone who has trusted the Guide rather than the anxiety of someone who is trying to navigate alone.
A Prayer to Release the Need to Know Everything First
Dear Lord, I am going to do the specific, costly, this-requires-something-of-me thing of releasing the need to have the complete picture before I move. The whole plan. The full itinerary. The guaranteed outcome that removes the risk from the obedience. I have been holding the next step hostage to the certainty that is not coming before the step is taken. Let me take the step. With what I have. With the light that is available for the foot rather than the full floodlight for the whole road. Release the grip on the certainty I do not have and let it be replaced by the trust in the God who does. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer to Trust the Guide More Than the Map
God, the map I have been working from is incomplete — the picture I assembled of where this life was going and by what path and on what timeline has turned out to be a sketch rather than a complete plan. And the incomplete map has been producing the frustration of the person who is trying to navigate by a document that does not have all the information. Give me the Guide in place of the map. Not the plan but the presence. Not the full itinerary but the God who knows the terrain from the inside and who goes before me into every section of the path that the map does not show. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer of Gratitude for the Guidance Already Given
Heavenly Father, before I ask for more direction I want to account for what has already been given — the step that I could not see before I took it that became clear in the taking, the door that opened when I was standing in front of a different door, the redirection that felt like a detour and turned out to be the actual route. The guidance has been real even when I have not paused to acknowledge it as such. Thank You for every moment of direction that was given and received and acted on in this life. Let the gratitude for what was given be the faith for what is still being sought. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer When the Direction Has Finally Become Clear
Dear Lord, the clarity arrived. Not all at once and not in the form I was picturing — but in a form that is genuine and recognizable and sufficient for the moving that it is calling me toward. I want to mark this moment before the relief of having it drives me immediately into the action without the acknowledgment of the One who provided it. You spoke. I heard. The path is clearer than it was and the clearing was not the product of my analysis or my persistence alone — it was the answer to the asking, the direction that came from the God who gives it generously to all who ask. I received it. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer to Walk Forward in the Direction Given
God, I have the direction. The step is clear. The hesitation now is not discernment — it is the specific fear of the person who asked for the direction and received it and is now sitting in the gap between the knowing and the going. Move me. Not with the forceful push of someone who is making me do what I do not want to do — with the specific, interior, something-in-me-is-ready movement of the person who has been given the direction and who has decided, in this prayer, to walk in it. The path is clearer than it was. I am choosing to go in the direction it is pointing. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Closing Prayer — For Everyone Who Is Looking for the Way
Dear Lord, I have prayed through every dimension of the seeking — the fork in the road and the load-bearing decisions, the silent seasons and the specific people in the specific situations, the fog and the doubt and the releasing of the need to have everything mapped before the moving begins. And I arrive at the closing prayer the way every honest prayer for guidance eventually arrives — not at the full map, but at the God who is the Guide. You said I am the Way — not I will show you the way, not I have the map for the way, not I know where the way is. I am the Way. The guidance is not a set of directions given from a distance. It is the presence of a God who goes with the person who is asking, who knows the terrain because He made it and walks it with the people He made, who provides enough light for the step that is available and holds every subsequent step in the same hands that are holding the person taking the first one. Let everyone who has prayed these prayers go into the unclear path in the company of the One who is the path — not anxious, not paralyzed by the incomplete picture, not waiting for the certainty that the faithful life was never promised but also never required. Walking. Toward the God who goes before. In Jesus’ name, amen.
