Not the contentment of someone whose circumstances were comfortable — the contentment of someone who had found a source of interior stability that the circumstances could press on without moving. I want what he had. Not his circumstances — his contentment. The specific, learned, this-did-not-come-naturally contentment that he said he had discovered through the full range of both plenty and need. I am in the need right now. Let the need be the school rather than just the suffering. Let me learn what the need is for. And let the contentment that arrives on the other side of the learning be genuinely mine. A Prayer for the Person Who Has Lost Hope About the Financial Situation
God, the financial situation has gone on long enough that the hope about it resolving has gone thin in a way I want to be honest about rather than perform the faith that the thin hope is not currently producing. I still believe You can. I believe You can more than I believe the math. But the believing has been pressed by the duration of the difficulty into something quieter and more costly and less immediately available than the faith I came in with. Restore the hope. Not by changing the circumstances first — by speaking into the interior where the hope lives and where it has been running low. Refill what the length of this has depleted. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer to Live Generously in the Tight Season
Heavenly Father, the tight season has produced in me a financial defensiveness that is understandable and not entirely healthy — the closing of the hands around what is available that is driven by the fear of not having enough if I give from what is there. I know what the widow of Zarephath did with her last meal and I know what it produced. I know what the disciples’ lunch became when it was given rather than kept. I am not asking for the foolishness of irresponsible giving when the obligations are real. I am asking for the faith that gives from trust rather than only from surplus. Let me give well even in the tight season. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Dear Lord, I have prayed through every dimension of the financial difficulty this season has carried — the fear and the specific bills, the job loss and the debt and the unexpected expense, the wisdom for stewarding and the faith for the breakthrough and the surrender that releases the whole thing into hands that hold it better than mine. And I arrive here at the closing prayer the way every honest prayer about money eventually arrives — not at the solution, but at the God who is bigger than the problem. You are Jehovah Jireh before I named the need. You were providing before I knew provision was required. And You are present in this specific, named, real financial difficulty with the same attentive, faithful, nothing-about-this-escapes-My-notice care that You have brought to every genuine need in the entire history of bringing genuine needs to You. Let the person reading this tonight — the one with the bill on the counter and the account that does not cover it and the fear that arrives at three in the morning with the specific arithmetic of the gap — let them know that the God who made the oil multiply and the ravens find Elijah and the coin appear in the fish is the same God they are praying to right now. Not a God of the distant past. The same God. Present. Providing. Already working in the direction of the answer before the prayer finished asking for it. Provide, Lord.
