You don’t have to fit a whole relationship into an anniversary card. A few sincere words can be enough: something you appreciate, a memory worth keeping, or a warm wish for the couple you’re celebrating. Choose a message below that sounds like you, and change any details to fit.
Short anniversary card messages
When the printed greeting already says a lot—or you simply prefer a short note—these messages can stand on their own.
- To your partner: Happy anniversary. I love this life we’re making together.
- To your partner: Thank you for being the person I want to tell everything to first. Happy anniversary.
- To your partner: Another year, and I still look forward to seeing you at the end of the day. Happy anniversary, love.
- To another couple: Happy anniversary to you both. So glad to have a reason to celebrate you today.
- To another couple: Wishing you a happy anniversary and plenty of good things to look forward to together.
- To your partner: Happy anniversary to my favorite person to do absolutely nothing with.
For your spouse or partner
You can be tender without sounding like a different person. Pick the thought you mean most, whether it’s gratitude for everyday kindness, a shared memory, or something that still makes you laugh. If a sample mentions coffee or a café, swap in your own detail.
- Thank you for the little things you do without making a fuss: the coffee you make before I’m awake, the way you remember to ask how something went, the last bite you save for me. I notice, and I love you for them. Happy anniversary.
- You know when to make me laugh and when to just sit beside me. I love that we can talk for hours, but we don’t have to fill every quiet moment. Thank you for making room for all the different versions of my day. Happy anniversary, love.
- Happy anniversary to the only person who laughs at my jokes after hearing them four times. I’d say I’ll retire the material, but we both know I won’t.
- I still think about that afternoon when we went out for a quick coffee and ended up talking until the café closed. Nothing special was planned, and it became one of my favorite memories. Happy anniversary. I’d love a hundred more afternoons like that with you.
- Happy anniversary. I love having things to look forward to with you: places we haven’t been, meals we haven’t tried, plans we haven’t quite worked out. I don’t need to know exactly what the next year holds to be excited about sharing it with you.
- Thank you for taking my hopes seriously, even when they’re still half-formed ideas. You ask questions, listen to the long version, and help me remember why I wanted to try in the first place. Having you in my corner means so much to me. Happy anniversary.
- The kitchen music, the errands, the show we’re somehow always three episodes behind on—these are the things I miss when we’re apart. I love our big memories, but I love our ordinary routine, too. Happy anniversary to the person I want beside me for both.
- When something good happens, telling you is part of the good thing. When something is hard, I’m grateful I don’t have to keep it to myself. Thank you for sharing so much of life with me. Happy anniversary.
- One of my favorite things about you is how interested you are in the world. I love hearing about whatever has caught your attention, even when I know nothing about it. I hope the next year brings you plenty to get excited about. Happy anniversary—I love you.
- Happy anniversary. You were an excellent choice, and I say that as someone who can spend twenty minutes deciding what to order for dinner. I love you. Let’s celebrate somewhere with a short menu.
For your parents
Your note doesn’t have to sum up your parents’ marriage. You can thank them for something you’ve experienced, send love from the family, or simply wish them a happy day. Use the names or parent titles that feel natural in your family.
- Happy anniversary, Mom and Dad. Thank you for the home you made and for all the ways you’ve shown up for me over the years. I’m grateful to you both. I hope today gives you time to enjoy each other’s company and do something just for yourselves.
- Happy anniversary to you both. Wishing you a lovely day and a celebration that suits you, whether that’s a favorite dinner out or a quiet evening at home.
- Happy anniversary! Some of my favorite family memories begin with everyone gathered around your table. Thank you for making people feel welcome and for giving us so many reasons to come back. I’m sending you both lots of love today.
- You spend so much time thinking about the rest of us. Today, I hope you get to be the ones enjoying the meal, choosing the music, and staying a little longer if you feel like it. Happy anniversary, with love and a toast to you both.
- From siblings or the whole family: Happy anniversary from all of us! Wherever we are today, we’re thinking of you and sending our love. Thank you for everything you mean to this family. We hope you have a wonderful day, and we look forward to celebrating with you soon.
For friends and other couples
Let your closeness guide the tone. Friends may enjoy a shared joke or a little appreciation; a couple you barely know may prefer a simple congratulations. You don’t need to comment on the inner workings of their relationship to write something warm.
- For close friends: Happy anniversary to two of our favorite people. We never seem to run out of things to talk about—or reasons to laugh—with you. Thanks for being such good friends. We hope you have a wonderful time celebrating today.
- For relatives you don’t see often: Happy anniversary! We’re sending lots of love your way today. We don’t get to see you as often as we’d like, but you’re both very much in our thoughts. Hope you have a lovely celebration, and let’s catch up soon.
- For friends who often host: Happy anniversary to two people who always make room for us at their table. Your invitations mean more than you probably realize. Tonight, we hope someone else does the cooking and you get to enjoy being celebrated.
- For a couple you’ve met recently: Happy anniversary! It was a pleasure meeting you both, and I’m glad to have the chance to send my best wishes on this happy occasion. Enjoy your celebration.
- For a workplace acquaintance: Congratulations on your anniversary. Sending warm wishes to you and your partner for a lovely celebration and much happiness in the year ahead.
- A lighthearted note for friends: Happy anniversary! Wishing you a wonderful celebration, an excellent dinner, and a photo where you both like how you look.
For a milestone anniversary
Name the year, then give it a thought of its own. A first anniversary might call for delight in new memories; a later milestone might invite a look back. Neither needs to become a speech—or a claim that every year has been perfect.
- First anniversary, from a partner: Happy first anniversary. I love that we now have a whole year’s worth of “remember when” moments: the ones we planned and the ones that surprised us. Thank you for every new memory. I’m looking forward to finding out what we’ll be remembering this time next year.
- Tenth anniversary, from a partner: Ten years ago, I couldn’t have pictured every turn our life would take. Now I look back and see so many conversations, decisions, adventures, and ordinary days we shared. I love knowing you as well as I do—and still having more to discover. Happy tenth anniversary.
- Twenty-fifth anniversary, from a partner: Twenty-five years together, and there’s so much history in the smallest things: a familiar look, a favorite story, a phrase nobody else understands. I treasure that history. Thank you for the effort, the laughter, and the kindness you’ve brought to our life. Happy anniversary, with all my love.
- Fiftieth anniversary, from a family member or friend: Happy fiftieth anniversary. There’s so much history behind those words, and today belongs to you both. I’m glad to have a chance to celebrate this milestone with you. Sending love and warm wishes as you mark fifty years together.
- Any milestone, from a well-wisher: Congratulations on this milestone anniversary. I hope you have time today to look back at a few favorite moments and celebrate in a way that feels right to you. Wishing you both much happiness in the next chapter.
When the year has been difficult
You don’t have to pretend the year was easy. To your partner, say only what you sincerely mean. To another couple, keep any acknowledgment brief and leave private details out of the card; a quiet wish may be more fitting than a big declaration.
- To a partner: This year asked a lot of us. I want you to know I noticed how much you carried, including the things that didn’t get much acknowledgment. I’m grateful for you and for the care you’ve shown me. Happy anniversary, with love.
- To a partner: This has been a complicated year, and a card can’t say everything. But on our anniversary, I can say this: you matter to me, and I wanted to mark today with care. I hope we can find a little time to rest and enjoy something good together.
- To another couple, acknowledging a hard year: Thinking of you both on your anniversary, especially after such a demanding year. I hope today offers a little breathing room and something you can enjoy together. Sending love and warm wishes to you both.
- To another couple, keeping the circumstances private: Happy anniversary. We’re thinking of you both and sending our love. If you’d like some company soon, we’d be glad to have you over for a quiet dinner. For today, we hope you get to enjoy a little time together.
Make the message sound like you
Keep the wording that feels natural, and replace anything you wouldn’t say aloud. One detail is often enough to make a sample your own. Here’s how message 9 could change for someone with a well-loved travel story:
Original: Happy anniversary to the only person who laughs at my jokes after hearing them four times. I’d say I’ll retire the material, but we both know I won’t.
Personalized: Happy anniversary to the only person who still laughs at my “shortcut” story from our trip to Maine. I’d say I’ll retire the material, but we both know I won’t. I love that we can still make each other laugh.
The travel detail and the last sentence make the note more personal without turning it into a letter. For a non-joking message, you could name a small kindness or a favorite afternoon instead.
A simple pattern is opening, personal detail, closing: start with “Happy anniversary,” say what you’re remembering or appreciating, and finish with your love or a wish for the couple.
For a partner, try All my love, Yours, or your usual affectionate sign-off. For parents, With love or Love, all of us may fit. Friends might get Cheers to you both; colleagues or acquaintances, Warm wishes. Your familiar way of signing your name is a good choice, too.
